PURE for YOU

Climate change is one of the biggest and most urgent threats faced by humanity. Its impact is likely to be far reaching - in the UK and throughout the world.

Through our everyday actions - e.g. using appliances in our homes, driving our cars and taking flights, we consume energy and produce emissions of greenhouse gases - in particular carbon dioxide - which contribute to climate change. The average UK household produces around 6 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year from the home and appliances, and a further 4 tonnes from travel. That is enough greenhouse gas from one typical family to fill ten hot air balloons.

We can all do our bit by measuring our carbon footprint and finding ways to reduce it. Take a look at our energy saving tips for ideas on how to save energy and money – both at home and whilst travelling.

We can then 'offset' our remaining 'unavoidable' emissions by giving a donation to support a project elsewhere in the world to make an equivalent greenhouse gas saving on our behalf. This is what is known as carbon offsetting. Please see how does offsetting work for further details.

You can offset part or all of your carbon footprint either by making a simple donation to PURE, or by first calculating your footprint using our domestic calculator, and then offsetting the result. You can also use our travel calculator if you simply wish to offset a single or annual journeys made by air, road or rail.  To find out more about the factors we use and how we calculate carbon emissions, please click here.

Offsetting is a simply way of demonstrating your support for tackling climate change.
